The Head and the Heart

As hands trip
Featherlight
Across my skin
The reaction is instantaneous

Electrical pulses
Like magic
Hot
Almost burning
Leaving a trail of marks
That call my blood to the surface

My flesh warms to the caress of frost
Reverent winter
And it’s in that sheen
Of blood at the surface
On the surface
That I feel the heat beneath the frost
That the sharp, careful cold is blistering hot
And the head wonders whether this was what the heart was missing

The human element is earth
Grounded
Warm to the touch
When you get deep enough

The dead are cold
Fiery on the surface
But cold, cold beneath
That warmth a candle
Snuffed

The fae?
Even in exile we glow with the heat of spring
Impart it upon each other
Thawing
Ice as crystals upon the skin
Melting to form the dew of growth
Life
Roots digging deep to entwine
Grow together

The heart beats twice
The heads meet once
And in that meeting come together
All but banishing the cold and lonely
World of darkness
As quietly and quickly as it arrived
